Dr. Andrews Dr. Andrews, ½ of a set of twins born in Heidelburg, Germany, moved to Maine from Hartford, Connecticut at the delicate age of 5 and has lived in Portland the majority of his life (This makes him "almost" a Maine native). A graduate of Deering High School and the University of Maine at Orono, he then received his DVM degree from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. He returned to Maine and practiced in a mixed animal practice (with many stories to tell) until February of 1983 when he joined with Dr. Norman Stiles and Dr. Lesley Birmingham at the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital. Since Dr. Stile’s retirement in January of 2006 and Dr. Birmingham’s retirement in January 2008, Dr. Andrews has reluctantly ascended to the position of “wise veterinary elder” within the practice.
His professional pursuits include serving as past president of the local Down East Veterinary Medical Association, president of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, and president of the New England Veterinary Association. Currently Dr. Andrews is serving the State of Maine Veterinarians as the Maine Representative to their National Organization, the American Veterinary Medical Association and remains as a vice president and editor of the International Association of Fly Fishing Veterinarians (www.iaffv.org.). Dr. Andrews favorite part of the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital are the many clients he has developed relationships with over the past 30 years. The “human at the end of the lease” creates a never ending pleasant rewarding day with many opportunities to help people and their pets thrive in Southern Maine.
Outside interests include a lifetime of involvement with music and percussion from high school and college marching bands, choir, community orchestra, concert band, community theater, and recently, world percussion, including the African Djembe, Middle Eastern Frame drums, and the Irish Bouran. A retired runner with many entries at the Beach to Beacon or Boy’s Club Patriot’s Day 5 mile run, he remains physically active with the "Old Boot" hockey league, and the "Mighty Docs" Veterinary Hockey Team in the winter. In the summer you may catch him on a wave surfing at Higgins Beach, fly fishing for the elusive stripe bass, brook trout or landlocked salmon deep into the woods of Maine, or riding his recently acquired Suzuki Burgman Motorscooter or BMW LT touring bike with his wife, Elizabeth. |
